Hello Tucson!
As our summer comes to a close, I'm excited to be able to offer this simple blog which will serve as one means of communicating updates in the refugee K-12 education community and as a means of sharing documents pertinent to our work with refugee children, teens, and young adults. I know that some will say, "Another website!" but I hope that most will simply favorite this page and come back to it as often as needed. I also hope you will share this link widely within your networks - we can never be sure that everyone is "in the loop" and it is better to have received a link 3 times than not at all. :)
As School Coordinator for Refugee Resettlement in Tucson, I am also thrilled to introduce CENTER: A Finding Voice Space. This space, both virtual and actual, will serve as a hub for refugee and ELL education in Tucson. A program of Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest, CENTER will be part of the Refugee Focus division of programming offered by LSS-SW and will serve all refugees in Tucson regardless of their resettlement agency affiliation, religious or cultural background, or any other category of differentiation. In other words, CENTER: A Finding Voice Space is for every refugee K-12 student, every parent/guardian of a refugee K-12 student, and every teacher, school or agency staff member, volunteer, or community partner working with and for refugee student and family members here in Tucson. As CENTER's director and as School Coordinator, I will work with each of the three resettlement agencies, all of our local districts and schools, and each of our students, families, and community partners to build a more connected, vibrant, and successful educational network. Please visit the CENTER tab on this blog for details about the space (located at 55 N. 6th Avenue, Suite #101) and about tutoring, workshop, and other program offerings.
Thank you for your work, your care, and your commitment to providing quality learning experiences and environments for each and every student in our city!
Sincerely,
Julie Kasper, NBCT
